— SHORT PROGRAMS 2016


MOEBIO Short Programs are educational sessions covering key aspects in healthcare, innovation, management and entrepreneurship. The Short Programs are aimed at students, professionals and entrepreneurs wishing to broaden their skill set and acquire new practical knowledge about today’s most pressing issues in a short period of time.

The sessions included in each Short Program form part of the Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona)*, MOEBIO’s full time postgraduate program in Biodesign, and so participants will have the chance to attend sessions with d·HEALTH fellows who are being trained to develop innovative healthcare technologies and start their own businesses.


The goals of the Short Programs are:

   - To study trends and identify the main challenges within the healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and  medical devices industries 
   - To understand healthcare organizations, provisions, regulation and financing
   - To provide managers and entrepreneurs with new tools and mindsets to manage their organizations 
   - To contribute with the generation and promotion of medtech industry knowledge


The  Short Programs are specifically designed for:


Entrepreneurs, managers and executives of healthcare organizations, students, recent graduates and other professionals interested in expanding their areas of expertise
 in healthcare and entrepreneurship. 


Cancellation Policy

To  withdraw from a session you must send an e-mail to: jperez@biocat.cat. If cancellation is received more than one week (7 working days) before the date of the Short Program session, you will be reimbursed for 100% of the registration fee. If cancellation is received during the week prior to the date of the lesson, you will be reimbursed for 50% of the registration fee. If no notice is given, participants will not be reimbursed even if they do not attend the session.

* The Short Programs sessions may change their date or time depending on the lecturer's availability. Assistants will be informed in advance. 

1. Understanding Healthcare Systems

This pack of lectures provides an overview of the healthcare systems in Spain, Europe and USA. It offers a valuable outlook on how history has shaped the different healthcare systems in these regions, covers the current main providers and their roles, studies how they are funded and allocate resources, and finally introduces hospital organization? These sessions will allow you to become familiar with the main trends and challenges facing health systems today, as well as the current organizational responses to address them. Who are the main service providers? How are they funded? What are their main challenges and concerns? This pack of classes provides answers to these questions.

2. Update on the Life Sciences Industry

Looking to the future, this pack of lectures provides an insightful overview of how the biotechnology, medtech and pharmaceutical industries are organized, their key stakeholders and the main trends, challenges and opportunities. Given by professionals from the sector, they also provide a historical evolution of the life sciences industry, an introduction to regulations and key reforms, and the resources available for keeping up to date. How the biotech, pharma and medtech industries are like? Who are the key stakeholders? What are the main trends and opportunities? This pack of lectures provides answers to these questions.

3. Medical Devices I: Product Development

This pack of lectures covers key aspects in the process of the conceptualization and creation of medtech product. Students will learn about biomedical engineering and how to design medical devices, as well as about the new materials used in the design. Special emphasis will be given to design and prototyping: why it is important when designing a product.

4. Medical Devices II: Market Access

This pack of lectures provides knowledge about the main elements to consider and work with when introducing a medtech product into the market, including the development of health technology assessment, the definition of market access strategies and knowledge of the regulatory pathways, from both a European and a US perspective. What should I demonstrate about my product? Who should I contact to introduce my product into the hospital? Should I patent it in the US or in the EU first?

5. Entrepreneurship and Management

This pack of lectures is geared towards professionals and entrepreneurs who are looking to learn new tools and approaches in order to run their businesses more efficiently and to create effective brands. Because of the difficulties raising money in the current economic context, it also includes classes focusing on traditional and alternative sources of funding, as well as an introduction to financial management. It also provides an overview of the healthcare industry value chains and business models, covering the main stakeholders in the life sciences sector. It provides powerful insight and key figures on the main stakeholders in life sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare services, as well as the main trends and challenges they face. Additionally, this set of classes introduces the topic of business-model innovation applied to the healthcare industry. How is value created and delivered in healthcare? What are its main financial models? How can we recognize innovative business models in healthcare? This pack of classes provides answers to these questions.
