Marco Paccagnella is an Italian designer based in Barcelona. Atia Cortés is computer science engineer and master in Artificial Intelligence by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She is finishing her PhD and is an associate teacher in computer interfaces both at UPC. During the last 10 years she has participated in several national and EU funded research projects related with assistive technologies, intelligent services for healthcare, social networks and robotics.
Salvador Llas is a product development engineer. He studied Industrial and Materials Engineering. For the last 10 years he has been working at Neos Surgery as the Head of Product Development, bringing from concept to market implantable medical devices. He is expert on advanced manufacturing technologies and smart materials such shape memory alloys and reinforced materials. During this time, Neos Surgery has received many international awards on Innovation and Design. He is co-inventor of several patents on the medical field. Additionally, he is involved on the worldwide product approval (CE mark, FDA and others) and on regional, national and EU funded projects related with medical devices.
Guillermo Talavera is a physicist (1999), electronic engineer (2001), PhD in Computer Science (2009) and finished a MBA in 2017. After his PhD, he has been several years working in the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona as teacher, researcher and head of the Wireless Ultra Low Power Area of a research group in the Microelectronics department. From January 2014, he is a Project Manager at IBEC research center. From 2016 he is one of the co-founders of IoT Partners S.L., a hardware and software consultancy in the field of Internet of Things.
Once he finished his studies in Molecular Biology in the United Kingdom, Robert decided to change his field and finished his thesis about Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modelling at the University of Barcelona. He was later in charge of the Computational Chemistry and Biology department in one of the reference pharmaceutical companies in Spain, where he gathered more than 12 years of experience in the development of new drugs. From 2011 to 2016 he worked at ZBM Patents and Trademarks where he elaborated patentability and freedom of operation reports, apart from drafting and prosecueing patents in the life sciences field. He is now Chief Scientific Officer of Nostrum Biodiscovery, the first joint spin-off of IRB and BSC.
Josep Amat, born in 1940, is currently an emeritus Industrial Engineer in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). He graduated as an Industrial Engineer in 1976 and later became Doctor in the same field in 1977. Upon completion of his studies he started to collaborate as a student in the Automatics Laboratory and at the same started to give lessons of electronics in the Industrial Engineer School of Barcelona. In 1987, Josep Amat became Professor of Technology and Computers at UPC, and in 2010 was commemorated as an emeritus Professor after his retirement. Between 1991 and 2010 Josep was invited as a partner Professor at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the MIT (Massachusetts, USA). During these last years, he focused his research on two areas: Marine Robotics and Surgical Robotics, working in the Industrial Robotics Institute (IRI) and Biomedical Engineering Robotic Center (CREB). He also worked as a Head of Research for the Research Group of Intelligent Robotics (GRINS) in UPC. Josep Amat is a member of the Catalan Studies Institute since 1990 and also from the Science and Arts Royal Academy of Barcelona since 2000.

Dan E. Azagury, MD, graduated from medical school in Geneva in 2001 and then completed surgical residency at the Geneva University Hospital. His focus during training was laparoscopy and bariatric surgery, as well as questioning current perioperative management habits such as postoperative nutrition. During this time, he kept a passion for innovation and design, winning second place in a BBraun suture design competition in Switzerland. After completing surgical training and board certification Dan E. Azagury decided to pursue this innovation route further and went to Boston for a research fellowship at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. This fellowship mostly focused on novel endoscopic techniques and device development. Amongst other projects, he participated in the development and experimentation of magnetic anastomoses in the gastrointestinal tract, a gastrointestinal bleeding sensor and endovascular bleeding therapies. He also designed a novel surgical device during that time. He extended his Boston experience with a clinical fellowship in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at the same institution, the following year. He then decided to further explore his passion for innovation and became a fellow at the Biodesign Fellowship in innovation at Stanford University. This team based fellowship with 3 engineers resulted in two main inventions and projects in the fields of urology and intensive care and the creation of two startup companies. Dan extended his stay at Stanford and focus on the intensive care project with Kate Garrett, his co-fellow during the fellowship. Kate is now CEO of their company, Ciel medical. Dan is now back on faculty in Geneva, in charge of Bariatric surgery at Geneva’s University Hospital and working on innovation projects and programs in collaboration with multiple institutions.

Simon Kavanagh is currently the international manager of KaosPilots. His work consists of promoting and creating collaborations between the school and international organizations and co-creating new solutions to learning and creating bridges between the Design and Business worlds. Previously he worked as a Creative Director at Interact Irish Multimedia firm. During these years he designed, programmed or managed approximately 600 multimedia titles in the business, educational, IT, online-Gaming, leisure and banking sectors for such clients as Oracle, Microsoft, Chase, Reuters, Esat and Masterfoods and set up divisions in NYC and Paris. He then became a consultant in R&D for Windmill Lane Studios in the areas of Interactive Television, Content Management systems and online gaming before moving to Paris to further his studies in digital media and art. He re-embarked on the educational path in Shanghai where he lectured a British degree in new media, design and culture for three years, until 2006, when he joined Kaospilots. David Maltz is a Principal at Intervalent, and independent consultancy focused on product development and innovation strategy for consumer-facing medical devices. David has worked in product design & development for over 20 years, with the last 14 of those focused exclusively on medical products. Raúl Martín-Ruiz is currently Investment Director at Ysios Capital and chairman of the board of STAT Diagnostica. Ysios is a leading Spanish independent venture capital firm that provides private equity financing to early- and mid-stage human healthcare and biotechnology companies. María Angeles holds Masters degrees in Emotional Intelligence (2011) and NGOs Management (2011) at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia respectively. She graduated in Philosophy at Universidad de Murcia.

Anna Riera is currently the responsible of the technical direction of Unió Catalana d’Hospitals, an association of healthcare organizations that provide healthcare and social services for the public healthcare system in Catalonia. She is an expert and has a comprehensive knowledge of healthcare systems field including organization model, healthcare delivery services funding and payment, quality models and innovation. She also works actively, along with providers, to improve public service systems. Previously Riera worked as a doctor, specialized in Internal Medicine, and she is also member of the Global Health Leadership Forum, from University of California Berkeley School of Public Health in partnership with Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra Economics and Health Research Center (CRES).. Anna Riera holds a degree in Medicine from Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona as well as a MBA from ESADE Business School.
Luis Ruiz Ávila is one of the founding partners and current CEO of Spherium, a firm that provides operational, strategic and business development expertise to transform into economic value academic knowledge or related projects from established companies in the biomedical sector. His responsibility is the acquisition of projects and further business development. Luis started his career in the industry at Almirall in 1997 as project manager and business developer. In 2001 he left Almirall to participate in creating Advancell, one of the first Spanish biotechnology spin-offs, where he served as CEO from its conception until December 2008, when he left his position to create Janus. In 2002 he participated in the creation of ERA-Plantech (now ERA-Biotech), being interim CEO until 2004, when he became Chairman of its Board of Directors until 2007. In 2009 he served as CEO of the Madrid based company TCD-Pharma, Biotech Crossroads Group. He was a member of the board of Asebio between 2004 and 2008. He is the founder of CataloniaBio, the Catalan association of biotech companies, and member of its board. Luis regularly participates in working groups of local institutions, particularly Biocat. Luis holds a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), and, before joining industry, he spent the first 10 years of his career as a researcher and lecturer in different academic positions in various Universities and Research Centers in Spain and in the US (Roche, Mount Sinai NY). He has authored over 25 research papers in prestigious international journals (Nature, PNAS, J. Neurosci) and translated into Spanish several reference textbooks in molecular biology and genetics. He regularly contributes opinion articles on biotechnology management in newspapers and magazines at national level. Occasionally teaches courses in project management and intellectual property, and is an active lecturer in communication and management strategy in the biotechnology and biomedical field.

Laura Sampietro-Colom is currently the Deputy Director for Innovation at the “Hospital Clinic” in Barcelona, a leading Teaching Hospital in Spain. Prior to this, Dr Sampietro-Colom was the General Director of Information Systems, Projects and Evaluation of the Catalan Health Institute, the leading provider of public health services in the Region of Catalonia (8 Hospitals and 238 Primary Care Centres) and the Director of the Strategic Planning Unit of Health Services within the Planning and Evaluation Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Catalonia. Laura has over 20 years of experience in evaluative research, specifically in HTA and was one of the founders of the Catalan Agency for Health Technology Assessment (nowadays AQuAS) with which she still collaborates as research associate. She was the Founding member of the International Society for Health Technology Assessment (HTAi), serving on the Board of Directors of HTAi since its foundation, including three years as Secretary of the Executive Committee, two years as Vice-President and two years as President. Responsible for the development of one of the research lines of the first international project conducted by the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA). She has been temporary adviser of the United Nations Agencies WHO and PAHO. Overall, Laura's work has focused on the evaluation of health care technologies, the identification, management and transference of information to improve the decision-making process, and on evidence-based planning healthcare services. Laura is a trained Medical Doctor specializing in Preventive Medicine and Public Health (University of Barcelona) and holds a PhD in Medicine and Surgery by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a Master of Science in Public Health by the Rolling School of Public Health (Emory University, Atlanta, USA)
Mercedes Serrano MD PhD works as a child neurologist and clinical researcher expert in metabolic and rare diseases at Sant Joan de Déu Hospital and the Centre for Biomedical Network Research on Rare Diseases (CIBERER). She is very active in exploring new approaches to use information and telecommunications technologies (ICT) to develop new forms of patient oriented research, enable parents to collaborate with researchers on rare diseases and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. She is the founder and principal researcher of www.rarecommons.org, a research Project at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona focused on the biomedical study of rare diseases that affect children. The undertaking is organized around an online platform that allows for interaction among users, thanks to a dynamic format modeled on virtual social networks and building upon information, learning, and participation. She is also the responsible of the medical contents of www.guiametabolica.org, a reference website for patients suffering inherited metabolic disorders and their families. Mercedes graduated in Medicine at the Miguel Hernández University in Alicante. Later she performed a Master in Child Neurology at the University of Barcelona and a Master in Neurosciences and Biology of Behavior at the University Pablo de Olavide, Sevilla. She gained her PhD degree at the University of Barcelona through her research on dopamine neurotransmission disturbances in pediatric patients. In 2007 she joined CIBERER and Sant Joan de Déu Hospital. She has written dozens of articles indexed in PubMed regarding inherited metabolic disorders including the use of ICT to empower patients and families suffering this group of rare diseases.

Rafael Vilasanjuan has been Director of ISGlobal’s Think Tank and Communication since March 2011. Deputy Director of the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) from 2006 to 2011, he worked for over 12 years with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), starting as Communication Director in 1995 and later as General Director of the Spanish section of MSF. In 1999, when the organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, he was appointed General Secretary of MSF International, organization in which he worked until 2006. As General Secretary of MSF, he was a founder member of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), Mr Vilasanjuan still collaborates with the DNDi. Mr Vilasanjuan is a journalist with a degree in information sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has a weekly opinion column on international affairs in El Periódico and contributes weekly as a political affairs analyst on the morning news programme on the leading radio station in Spain (Cadena SER) and on the leading news programme on TV3, Catalonia’s autonomous television network.
